Descended from the line of Shem a Benjamite was born,
And of the promises of God this Hebrew boy did learn.
Gamaliel taught him in the law, which Saul received with zeal;
About the Lord through Abraham, His mercy did reveal.

And of the prophet long ago, that asked, ‘Who has believed?
To whom has God revealed His arm and by His Spirit sealed?’
The boy soon grew into a man, to be a Pharisee,
He was so zealous for the law, the truth he could not see.

For some had turned to follow Christ and left the Jewish faith,
So in the High Priest’s name he went to hunt them unto death.
But then a light from heaven appeared, more powerful than the sun,
And Saul realised the Lamb of God, to Israel had come!

‘As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him:
Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’
[Acts 9:3-4]
