Trials Required

In times of peace and times of ease

The Christian life feels good

We pray our prayers and read His word

And all seems right with God.

But would we know if God had gone

For though we think we pray

How little thought we give to Him

When life works out our way.

Self satisfied and confident

We tend to drift from God

Soon prayer becomes more like a chore

We feel we do not need.
When at our ease self rule returns

God slowly fades from view

And without Him old sins return

As they’re inclined to do.

When trials come we realize
We cannot cope alone
We soon come to the end of self
And pray for God’s return.
But now our prayer is genuine
Not thoughtless like before
When we confess to God in truth
We know He will restore.

‘I will return again to My place
Till they acknowledge their offense.
Then they will seek My face;
In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.’
[Hosea 5:15]
