Knowing God

From the beginning of time human beings have had something that the rest of God’s living creation doesn’t have – a conscience.  Something else about people is a superstitious nature; a belief in something beyond our control and at the edges of our imagination. Some would say, ‘No, not me.’ Meanwhile they could be watching a movie about ghosts, and actors talking to the dead, fascinated by… what exactly? Or watching a sci-fi movie on the cataclysmic end-of-the-world waiting for the super hero to save the world from aliens. Meanwhile the family dog is groaning in the corner with boredom.

Have you ever noticed that there is always a ‘want’ in you; and that whenever you get whatever it is you ‘must have’, it’s still no good, so you want something else? This is really a need. When God created us He left an empty space in us that should be filled by Him; we can never be complete and content until that happens.

As the years go by we wonder what is beyond our old age. For some of us a sudden death in the family or a traumatic circumstance may jolt us into thinking about that earlier. But, from the time we are born we are destined to die and there is no escaping death.

We can deny it from now until we meet God (which incidentally is too late – please read on), but our Creator God who made the universe, made mankind in His image. So when we die it isn’t ‘lights out’ forever. We are not like a pet goldfish that dies, gets flushed down the toilet and ceases to exist, or like a farm animal that ends up cooked and eaten for dinner. No, our Creator has a different plan for us – we were created in His image, so our spirit (soul) can never die.

Life on earth can only last so long. None of us know how long that may be, but God knows exactly. In reality, life on earth is temporary – it is a preparation for eternity. So the question is – are we prepared?

The only way for us to be prepared for eternity is to know God personally, and the only way to know how to do that is through His word to us – the BIBLE.

There is a book, I’d like you all to read it.
It is the precious written word that God to us has given.
In it you’ll see, for God himself will show you,
Just who you are and where you stand with him…

Inside the book we read about creation,
Of how God made this world of ours and every living thing.
Of how he made a man and named him Adam,
And how he told him not to ever sin…

But Adam sinned and that was the beginning,
For since that time we all have sinned and lost we all would be.
But in his book God offers us forgiveness,
Through Christ his Son who died to set us free…

B – I – B – L – E  is a book from heaven,
B – I – B – L – E  is the Word.
B – I – B – L – E  is a book from heaven,
It is the written Word of God.

This little children’s poem sums things up very simply: God’s creation, the rebellion of mankind, and God’s plan of salvation revealed in the Bible. But unless God’s Spirit reveals it to us, our inherited sinful nature will continue to blind us from His truth. The Bible is a combination of books written by men inspired of God from about 1500BC to the first century which has been miraculously preserved until this very day. So what is the Bible all about? To put it simply it is a record of the creation of the universe, why it was created, how people messed things up and rebelled against their creator God, and God’s plan to restore His kingdom through His Son, Jesus Christ who died to save us.

God’s Kingdom

[Gaelic trad tune own arr & lyrics © 1987 Tom D Blakely]

Picture a garden, perfect creation.

This is the kingdom plan of the Lord.

Here are God’s children, happy and peaceful

Praising their Father, praising their God.

Soon they had fallen into temptation

Without their God they only do wrong.

God’s love rejected, no more protected

Fearful, unhappy, blinded by sin.

Darkness of judgment, light of salvation

Judging the earth yet still saving some.

Sinners may never enter God’s kingdom

Still we are told salvation will come.

Picture a Saviour, Christ the Redeemer

Paying for sinners with His own blood.

Kingdom established, waiting fulfilment

Soon we will see Him; praise to our God!

Contributors to this website know Jesus as their personal Saviour and have been inspired to write about God’s plan of salvation in poetry & song. The ‘Salvation’ category in particular is filled with the good news of God’s love for us, and how seriously He views our sin and rebellion. These days people take sin very lightly, but God cannot cannot tolerate sin… that is why Jesus had to die to save us.

If we ignore God’s word – the Bible, there is no hope for us and we will die in our sin. But that is not God’s will, so let us take a few minutes to see what the Bible says:

We are all sinners
‘As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one.’ [Romans 3:10]

‘For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.’ [Romans 3:23]

(This includes… good living, charitable people, church goers, pastors, ministers – us all)

There is a price to be paid for sin
‘For the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.’ [Romans 6:23]

Jesus paid the price for us
‘But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ [Romans 5:8]

(OK so much for the theory – what about in practice)

We must believe, repent and receive Jesus as our Saviour
‘…Sirs, what must I do to be saved? So they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved and your household.’ [Acts 16:31-32]

‘That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.’ [Romans 10:9]

The Way Of God
[Irish trad tune own arr & lyrics © 1992 Tom D Blakely]

The way of God to life eternal,
Is by the Saviour’s precious blood.
All those who seek the path to heaven,
Must come by Jesus Christ the Lord. . . . .

For God so loved us he sent a Saviour,
His Son to die that we might live.
When we trust Jesus as Lord and Saviour,
Our debt of sin God shall forgive.

Our God is rich in love and mercy,
And by His grace has freely given.
Though all mankind for sin should perish,
In Christ some yet shall be forgiven. . . . . .

‘Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me.’
[John 14:6]

The Bible says:

‘For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast.’ [Ephesians 2:8-9]

So there you have it. Not only is it possible to know God – it is God’s will that you do. Also note – it is a gift of God, freely given.

Some religions may suggest that you can get right with God by good works: perhaps by obeying a religious leader, complying with all the rites and rituals of a church, financially sponsoring it, good attendance, and so on, but be careful… You will never be justified by a priest or a pastor… Justification is the free gift of God, received only by a personal faith in Christ. So if you haven’t made your peace with God, do it now. Call on Jesus to save you, simply pray and ask Him to forgive you for your sins, and invite Him to come into your life and be your Saviour and Lord. This is not just a short term relationship, it is daily, and for eternity.

The Word Of God

[Tune & lyrics © 1988 Tom D Blakely]

The word of God is not a story
Or some advice to take or leave.
It is the word that brings salvation
To everyone who will believe. . . . . .

Come to the Lord today
Repent of sin.
Kneel at the cross of Christ
And be forgiv’n.

For all are lost without a Saviour
To free us from our debt of sin.
And Jesus’ blood was shed at Calv’ry
That you and I might be forgiv’n. . . . .

The Saviour died then rose triumphant
And now He sits in Heav’n above.
For us He died and now he calls us
May none reject His gift of love. . . . . .

On the subject of ‘Knowing God’ it would be wrong to leave people with the impression that God is an all-loving God and anything goes. Some of today’s clergy suggest that all reasonable faiths lead to God and by believing in some vague all encompassing God everybody will all be alright for eternity. This wishful thinking may sound very nice, be socially acceptable and politically correct, but it is contrary to God’s word: ‘…when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power.’ [2 Thessalonians 1:7-9] So, only those with a personal faith in God and justified by the blood of Jesus Christ will escape the judgment of God for sin. ‘How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation…’ [Hebrews 2:3] The final piece in creation’s jigsaw is when Jesus returns, as Saviour to all those who looked forward to His coming and believed on Him from the beginning of time. But for those who rejected Him He will return as their Judge. ‘It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.’ [Hebrews 10:31] May God reveal the truth to many before it is too late.

Saviour Or Judge?

[Tune & lyrics © 2011 Tom D Blakely]

No time to think, no time to act, when you are called by God.
Saviour or Judge, which will it be? Do you know Christ as Lord?

Who do you trust, if not the Lord? That is the question?
The media, the sciences? Finite minds; fixed and blind.
There is a God who made this world, but man disowned Him.
God sent His Son to save all those, who in faith, pardon claim.

Maybe you are content, trusting in man-made lies?
Flouting creation’s truths, as your body dies.
God ordains and nature complies.

Saviour or Judge, which will it be? Do you know Christ as Lord?
No time to think, no time to act, when you are called by God.

So where does that leave us? Eternity is forever! We must take time to think about these things and know where we stand with God. Remember [John 14:6] above; there is only one way and that is through the Lord Jesus Christ.
